How to Claim a Discount and Save Money on our New Website

Claiming a discount has never been easier! Our brand-new website recently launched, and we’re delighted with it.

Not only does it look great, but its much easier for our members to use and claim a discount.

Here’s a quick guide to who you exactly how to sign in to your account, how to find the discount that you’re looking for, and how to claim a fantastic offer.


First of all, what’s new on our website?

There are some fantastic new features that we hope you love just as much as we do:

  • New branding: not only have we got a new website, but our branding has had a slick makeover too. New logo, new colours, even more amazing discounts.
  • More intelligent searches: we’ve added a powerful on-site search system that makes finding discount even faster. Simply start typing and the search tool instantly recognizes the brand you’re looking for.

  • Improved navigation: upgraded, intuitive navigation makes the website’s performance much more efficient, allowing you to find the deals that you want much quicker.

How to sign in to your account

It’s really easy to sign in to your account and you can start saving money with our discounts as soon as you are registered.

Money Saving Tips

NHS Staff & Agency Staff Could Be Owed a Share of £Billions for PPI

Did you know that NHS and agency staff could be owed a share of £billions for mis-sold PPI?

While more than £27 billion has already been paid out in successful PPI claims, there is still the potential for billions more to be paid before the claims deadline comes into effect on August 29th 2019.

Unfortunately, not all sales people followed the correct procedure as they should have done and policies were mis-sold for decades.

Amazingly, sometimes PPI was added to an agreement without the knowledge or consent of the consumer, which means they were paying PPI premiums every month without knowing it.

The boom of mis-sold PPI

PPI was mis-sold on an industrial scale to people in all walks of life mostly between 1990 and 2010, many of whom were health sector workers who should never have been sold a policy in the first place as they may not have been able to claim on it.

Payment protection insurance is a product designed to help borrowers continue to make their repayments on a financial agreement if they must come out of work through accident, sickness or ill health.

However, the clauses within the policy and the suitability of healthcare sector workers may have prevented NHS and agency staff from ever being able to make a claim.

Policy exclusion clauses

Exclusion clauses built into the policy could make it impossible for the consumer to make a claim. Sales staff were supposed to make people aware of what those exclusions are but often failed to do so. These included:

  • Those in seasonal or part-time work (under 16 hours a week).
  • Employed on a temporary or contract basis.
  • Self-employed.
  • Aware of the possibility of redundancy in the future.
  • Having pre-existing medical conditions
  • Suffering from stress or backache
  • Under the age of 18 or over 65 years

Suitability for healthcare workers

There were other restrictions too. The one which may be relevant to some NHS staff is that sickness benefits could cover the cost of payments for up to a year which could make any PPI policy inappropriate.

It was the responsibility of the sales person to establish suitability. As soon as they were informed of the sick pay status if this deemed the policy unnecessary they should have called off the sale.

Agency workers

Agency workers may carry out the same role as an employed worker in the NHS or private healthcare, and you might think they could make a claim if they had to come out of work for any reason – but this is not necessarily so.  Unlike healthcare professionals within the NHS, the cause for mis-selling may not be due to sick pay & benefits.

With many self-employed agency workers, the policy could have been inappropriate because their employment status could mean that they would not have been able to make a claim on the policy.

What type of agreements could you have been mis-sold PPI with?

PPI has been mis-sold on a wide range of financial agreements. If you have ever had any of the following then you could be eligible to make a claim:

  • Loans
  • Credit cards
  • Mortgages
  • Overdrafts
  • Store cards
  • Mail order catalogues

Exactly how could PPI have been mis-sold to NHS staff?

Below is a checklist of the different ways in which PPI could have been mis-sold to you dependent on your circumstances at the time:

  1. Were your earnings while off sick guaranteed for six months or more and enough for you to live off?
  2. Did the sales person ask you questions about your age, employment status or health?
  3. Were any of the exclusion clauses mentioned?
  4. Were you told that PPI was optional or did you feel pressured into taking the policy out?
  5. Were alternative policies discussed?
  6. Were you advised of the cost of the premium as a separate item?
  7. Were you even aware that a policy had been sold to you?
  8. If it was a single premium policy, were you made aware of how much commission you were paying on the sale?

If the answer is no to any one of these questions, then it is possible you may have been mis-sold your PPI policy.

Even if the agreement the policy was connected to has finished you might still be eligible for a refund of all the premiums you paid along with additional interest.

Health Service Discounts Give a Helping Hand to a Healthcare Hero

We saw the recent news story in The Sun newspaper this week about an NHS worker who was hit with a large fine for overstaying in a car park after helping a man who had collapsed, and we decided that we wanted to help.

Margaret Kidson, who works at a health centre in south east London, received a £100 car parking fine for running over by 11 minutes, as a result of helping a man who had collapsed from an epileptic fit in the street. Margaret spent 20 minutes providing assistance to the gentleman before further support arrived.

We were sorry to hear that Margaret had been left out of pocket as a result of going beyond the call of duty, especially as we understand the hard work that health care professionals put in every day to look after our nation.

At Health Service Discounts, we pride ourselves on helping NHS and healthcare staff save money using our discounts, so to hear a story like this obviously grabbed our attention and we wanted to do something to show our appreciation for Margaret’s amazing efforts.

Getting Your First Job in the NHS: Tips to Help You Succeed

The NHS; it’s the nation’s proudest achievement, something that we need to protect as much as possible. One way to do that is to find the right people to work within this incredible structure, which is why there are so many different routes into working in the NHS.

Laboratory Student

If you want to become a doctor, nurse, or any other medical practitioner, you will need the right qualifications to do so. This means going to college and university and gaining a degree, which will then enable you to take the next steps, whatever they may be.

Decide on a path

Almost half of the jobs available in the NHS are non-medical, and although training will be required on most of them, what’s more important is your life skills.

If you’ve got the right set of skills, the world – and more importantly, the NHS – is your oyster. The first step is to work out what you want to do, and what matches your skills. If you’re good at organising people, then a managerial or office based role might suit you. If you prefer getting your hands dirty, then a construction role might be best for you.

Many people like the idea of working for the NHS. It’s a rewarding place to have a career, and that career can be one that lasts for a lifetime. Can Non-NHS Staff Benefit from Using Health Service Discounts?

We’ve provided discounts to NHS workers since 2001, helping staff make some great savings on their purchases. But recently, we’ve been able to open our discount scheme up to non-NHS staff so that they can benefit from our offers too.

We’re delighted about this because all healthcare workers do an amazing job, regardless of their role and the organisation that they work for.

It’s our little way of saying thank you for doing such a great job and looking after the health of our nation.

Let me explain.

Exactly who is entitled to use our discounts?

  • NHS staff (full time, part time or temporary/bank)
  • GP staff
  • Dental practice staff
  • Pharmacy staff
  • Retirees of any of the above groups
  • Carers (including unpaid, e.g. caring for family member.)
  • Students and trainees (e.g. medical or nursing students)
  • Support Workers
  • Social Care workers
  • Volunteers in the health sector
  • NHS related charities
  • Hospice staff
  • Foundation Trust members

It really doesn’t matter what your role is, if you work for a healthcare organisation then you are entitled to benefit from our scheme.


But all the offers say, ‘NHS discount’ on them?

Please don’t worry about this or let it put you off using an offer.

We’re in the process of updating our website to reflect the changes to our membership. We’ve been working hard to make this clearer on our site and we’ll be announcing some exciting information about this very soon.

Unless the offer states that you need to enter NHS ID details, provide NHS ID in-store or at the point of purchase, or if it requires an active NHS email address then you can use the discount.

How do non-NHS staff sign up?

It only takes a couple of minutes to join and you can start using our discounts right away. Firstly, go to our new member registration page and fill out the details on the form.

You need to select the appropriate member type on the first page of the form. The options are quite self-explanatory, however, if you don’t work in the NHS and don’t match any options, please select ‘Other’.

Follow the instructions on the following pages and then you’re ready to go.

Once you’ve registered, you’ll receive a Welcome Email which provides more information about our discount scheme.

How do I use a discount?

Once you’ve found an offer that you want to use, make sure you’re logged into your account and click on the offer.

To claim the discount, click on the green ‘Get Deal’ button. This will take you directly to our partner’s website to make your purchase as normal and the discount will be added automatically. Further details on each individual offer can be found in the Terms and Conditions section.

Alternatively, you may be presented with a voucher code. You need to Copy this code and click the ‘Get Deal’ button again. You’ll then be able to make your purchase and enter the voucher code at the checkout to get your discount.

Who needs the latest phone? Here’s why the sensible money is being spent on iPhone 7

Are you ready to upgrade your phone but struggling to decide which one to get?

I’ll be honest, it’s a tough decision, not least because of the expense.

iPhone 8, iPhone X and Google’s Pixel 2 have launched recently but with their pretty chunky price tags, you ask yourself “is it really worth it?”

You might even be considering sticking with the phone you’ve got. After all, you can still see through that cracked screen and the buttons still work… well, some of the time.

It’s easy to get carried away when you’re upgrading, and Apple are certainly very good at luring you in with all their talk of fancy new features on their latest devices.

Now, stop for one minute.

Take a breath and think about it.

Is a more expensive phone contract with a hefty upfront handset cost really what you want? And more importantly, can you truly afford it? If your honest answer is ‘yes’, then that’s great – go for it and enjoy!

But, if you’ve (reluctantly) come to your senses, then we’ve got the perfect phone for you…

And I’ll tell you why:

1. The iPhone 7 is a much cheaper option

The first, most obvious, and most important point; the iPhone 7 is much cheaper than the 8 and the X.

The iPhone X currently weighs in at a whopping starting price of £999. On a contract, you’re looking at around £79.99 per month, plus £99.99 up front.

The iPhone 8 is coming in at around £849, and on a contract for £49 per month, plus £29.99 up front.

In comparison, you can pick up an iPhone 7 using one of our discounts for FREE, with a monthly contract of just £32.99.


2. iPhone 7 looks very similar

Size-wise, there’s not a lot in it. The general look of the phones are very similar too, particularly the 7 and 8.

One of the biggest changes to the iPhone X is the edge-to-edge screen and they’ve removed the infamous Home Button. This does give it a very slick and modern look, but many people are fond of the Home Button and its ease of use.


3. The tech on the iPhone 7 isn’t much different

The iPhone 7 is similar to the iPhone 8 and not too far behind the X in terms of tech. It still packs an extremely powerful hardware, with great speed and overall performance.

If you are looking for a phone with blazing fast performance, then obviously the iPhone X is going to outshine the iPhone 7 all day long. But the iPhone 7 still holds its own and you must consider whether this extra kick in performance is worth the additional cost.


4. The iPhone 7 has an aluminium back rather than the iPhone X glass

One big change for the iPhone X is that the back of the phone is now made from glass. This isn’t great news for all the butterfingers out there, because now there’s not one screen, but two that you have to worry about.

The glass back does add a fantastic look and feel to the iPhone X, that you don’t get from the iPhone 7’s aluminium casing. But having extra protection from the foreseeable shattering after a few wines on the weekend could work out cost-effective in the long run.


5. The camera quality is similar for rear, front camera almost identical

The camera on mobile phones is a very important part in the decision-making process, everyone needs to take the perfect selfie, right?

You’ll be pleased to hear that there isn’t a great deal of difference between the iPhone 7, 8 and X. They all have 12MP cameras and many of the other features are the same, although the iPhone X has some additional features like Portrait mode and lighting.
